The Rider Beat #2

Jon Massey's Blog

Prior three weeks Posting Summary as follows:

July 22 - BLANK

As I write this I look at the gap between my last two posts like it's the same gaping hole between Smilin' Hank Burris's front chicklets. For this I feel shame, shame for the fact that as my Riders' have brought it all on the football field, I did not put it all out on Blogger.com and give it my all.

As the words hit this page a little voice in the back of my head beckons me to go play Madden instead....become a keyboard tapping quarterback instead of just musing about it. Have a nap, flex that bulging index finger and take names. Posting these entries have proven one thing...if you want something done ask Jon Massey to do a blog entry and give him your errand at the same time. Since i began writing this blog entry I have read Sports Illustrated, done my laundry, taken out the trash, contemplated, procrastinated and done everything else imaginable
It is in this same behavior that sees the collapse of 3rd down conversions, the collapse of teammates, teams, big games, and big organizations. For if every time i put off posting my thoughts Marcus Crandell decided not to take the snap we'd all be staring an 0-7 record in the face.

When the Saskatchewan Roughriders play a football game, their mind is on one thing. The next down, the next hit, the next huddle, the next movement of their opponent. This is a huge reason why they are atop the CFL standings at 6-1. Game #7 in spite of the loss, proved that profoundly. Down 30-4 in the latter stages of the 3rd quarter, the fans, who hadn't played a down all night were ready to pack it in and drive their bruised battered hearts of pride back home with them. The same was expected of the men in green who with a perfect record had the perfect excuse to look more forward to their post game meal than the final 15 minutes of orderly torture comparable to a walk through the Mendell Art Gallery.

On the very first play of the 4th quarter Marcus Crandell laid up a prayer for Adarius Bowman. ricocheting off the fingertips of two defenders, the pigskin landed safely in his arms, making it a 19 point lead, flattering up the scorecard a little.

Now there is one sole reason why the Riders are in 1st place today. When the going was deemed hopeless, the "deemed hopeless" kept going. After a quick two and out, Chris Szarka capped a blocked field goal with a determined plunge in the endzone to make it 30-18. This team resembled that brainiac that stays late after school to get ahead, like that 22 year old in his eigth year of high school, like that blogger that tries hopelessly to come up with good analogies (that's it...im done....no seriously).

with 2:45 remaining pint sized receiver Weston Dressler hauled in a pass between two defenders to narrow the margin to 30-25. It would not be enough but a message was sent. Just as Wes Cates uttered in week two "if you're not ready to play for 60 minutes your not ready to play the Riders'" those same words echo loud and clear through the prairies.

Going into the last ten weeks of the season, at 6-1 they must not become complacent, cocky and overconfident. They can't do as I have done and let three weeks go by without nothing to show for it. They must continue doing what they are doing.....

Pondering these things...I look warily at the Riders' game 7 result and hastily at my last two post dates. Eyes lighting up i find we have something in common.

In the end, the result may have ended up a dud, but the gap just got a lot narrower.
