Canada shuts out Russians en-route to a 2nd straight World Junior Championship

By: Jon Massey

Canada 5 Russia 0
Nothing in this tournament could have been more final, more decisive and more satisfying than the way the world juniors ended for Team Canada, who in front of 19,000+ fans at GM Place in Vancouver scorched the favoured Russians 5-0 to take their 2nd straight World Junior Championship.

Coming in as a legitimate spectator, countries such as Russia and U.S.A. reveled in the thought of Canada possibly having to watch the Gold Medal match-up in street clothes right in the midst of their home arena in their home country amongst their home fans.

No Way. No How.

Team Canada, led by the flawless record of Coach Brent Sutter, pulled off what many pundits could not have predicted come Dec. 26 when the World Junior Hockey Championships began...win a gold medal. Opening the scoring for the Canucks was Steve Downie, a player who no one thought would be on the team, two gaols were scored by Micheal Blunden, a player not too many canadian fans knew about prir to teh tourney, and the insurance goal was scored by former Saskatoon Contact and Meadow Lake product Blake Comeau. To top it all off, the final was scored by the captain and player who was in danger of never being able to play hockey ever again about 1 year ago, when he suffered a major groin injury.

This team was a proven underdog, against all odds they pulled through and rightfully deserve to be called once again a hockey powerhouse
